Karonga United gets MK500,000 to buy more players for the club

Second Vice President of the Football Association of Malawi-FAM Othaniel Hara has called on different stakeholders to assist Karonga United football Club to remain in the elite TNM Super League.

Hara was speaking in Mzuzu when he presided over the prize presentation ceremony for the 2017 Simama Premier League tournament.

“For a long time we have seen teams from Simama League getting promoted into super league and get relegated the following year. Enough is enough lets assist Karonga and other teams in the northern region to be remaining the Super League,” pleaded Hara.

He then donated 500 thousand Kwacha towards a fund created to assist Karonga United to get good players from all over the region.

“I am happy to hear that the Northern Region Football Association has created a fund to assist Karonga to find good players in the region to strengthen the club. To lead by example I am giving the fund 500 thousand kwacha as starter pack,” added the FAM Second Vice President.

Hara then thanked the Northern Region Football Association -NRFA for the smooth running of the 2017 Simama Premier league.

During the ceremony, FAM Second Vice President unveiled the football legend and former national team player Gilbert Chirwa whom government has posted to the northern region to assist in the sports arena.

Taking his part, NRFA General Secretary Masiya Nyasulu said the association was discussing with the sponsor to increase the sponsorship which is now pegged at 4 million kwacha.

“If I remember well on 9th June 2017 we held some discussions with the Sponsor Simama and he showed interest to double the sponsorship. But who knows he might raise it to 10 or 8 million,” revealed Nyasulu.

During the ceremony, Karonga United football club were crowned champions for 2017 Simama League and were given a trophy, medals and 1.2 million kwacha. Chilumba Barracks came second and went home with 600 thousand kwacha while Bolero and Rumphi Pirates got 300 thousand kwacha and 150 thousand kwacha for emerging third and forth respectively.

Rura football club was the most disciplined team and got 40 thousand kwacha.
In the individual category, Tonnic Viyuyi pocketed 40 thousand kwacha for scooping the golden boot. In the media category Allan Nyirenda of Voice of Livingstonia was the best radio journalist and got 30 thousand kwacha while in the print it was Yohane Chideya of Times Group who got a similar amount.

For the Online publication, Mike Zgambo of News 24 was recognized as the best while for Television MBC`s Alex Mwangosi emerged the winner and both got 20 thousand kwacha each.
